The Great Sandy Information Centre like its bionic inspiration the “mudskipper” fish sits unobtrusively in its river edge mangrove and melaleuca ecosystem. Patterns of sun light through the paperbarks and casuarinas intermingle with the building fabric collage producing a vibrant three-dimensional camouflage affect, similar to organisms that change colour according to their background. Simple yet legible parking is provided to users of all types of vehicles with the aim of the design providing direct and comfortable universal access to the information centre and public facilities maintaining good visibility from the street whilst minimising disturbance to existing land form and indigenous vegetation.
