The French Quarter Resort Noosa 1996

The “French Quarter” is a boutique resort hotel located in the Eastern precinct or “Paris end” of Hastings Street, a popular promenade in Noosa. The project incorporates references from French Pacific Colonial architecture. The site was difficult and the project very dense.

Streetscape of the scheme reinforces the gastronomic edge and alfresco footpath with awnings and casual shopping that has evolved in the street. The project responds to the immediate local civic and urban context.

A grand staircase addresses the street which leads to a large recreational internal courtyard space which is surrounded by separate village like building clumps following the topography with expressed lift towers, reinforcing the sub tropical landscapes ambience.

Variation in lime wash colouring, roof shapes and balustrading gives aesthetic diversity reinforcing the village atmosphere. The single and two bed units are innovative with small kitchens and experimental use of space using moveable bedroom shutters and retractable glass doors incorporating inside/outside living.

There is no centralised foyer as the complex is broken up into quarters giving more private and casual access to its patrons.

Large bathroom and laundry spaces are good for kids with sandy feet, togs, etc.
